How to become a "Diplom-Museologin/Diplom-Museologe (FH)" (graduate museologist) at the Fachhochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft (university of applied sciences) in Berlin:

Preparatory Internship:

6 months: Required for application. This internship can be done at a museum, archive, gallery or another cultural institution. For application a report about the internship is required. For more information on application see the official web site of the FHTW.

Basic course

4 semesters: Several courses provide a thorough grounding on the big themes of museum work:

collection management, preservation, presentation and research. This curriculum is completed by courses about law and data processing.

Internship Semester

1 semester: time to test the acquired knowledge in the museum practice.

Degree course

2 semesters: time to deepen the knowledge in some fields of the museum work. For example courses about natural history museums or art museums can be taken. There are also courses on museum marketing and preservation of historic monuments.

Diploma

3 months: time to write the dissertation. The studies end after the written dissertation is accepted and after an oral examination.
